Am Donnerstag, dem 3. März 1977, gab ABBA das erste ihrer elf Konzerte in Australien. Es fand auf dem Showground in Sydney statt. Dieses Konzert wurde in ABBA The Movie gezeigt und war besonders denkwürdig für den Regen, das Meer von Regenschirmen und Frida, die auf Händen und Knien rutschten und fielen. 1977 hatte Australien 14,1 Millionen Einwohner - 160.000 von ihnen sahen ABBA live - und 30.000 dieser Menschen waren bei der ersten Show in Sydney. Die Tickets für die Konzerte waren im vergangenen Oktober erstmals verkauft worden - die Tickets waren sehr schnell ausverkauft. Vor ABBA hatte es in Australien noch nie eine solche Konzertreise gegeben. Eine Tourparty mit 117 Personen, darunter ein 17-köpfiges australisches Orchester und ein Filmteam - 28 Tonnen Tonausrüstung, 30 Tonnen Beleuchtung und eine speziell angefertigte hydraulische Bühne zum Anheben und Absenken des Orchesters - ein einzigartiges Merkmal. Alle werden in IPEC-Sattelaufliegern im ganzen Land transportiert. Es waren 40 Besatzungsmitglieder erforderlich, um diese Ausrüstung auf- und abzubauen. An diesem Tag im Jahr 1977 war das Wetter nicht gut und es bestand Unsicherheit darüber, ob dieses Konzert stattfinden würde. Aber die Besatzung arbeitete weiter an der Ausrüstung und schloss die Einrichtung ab. Während des Aufbaus gab es einen Blitz, und einer der hohen Metalltürme, die für Beleuchtungsgeräte verwendet wurden, wurde vom Blitz getroffen, was dazu führte, dass einer der Besatzungsmitglieder zu Boden geworfen wurde. Dies war der Beginn eines sehr ereignisreichen Konzerts. Die Rolltore zum Ausstellungsgelände sollten um 17 Uhr geöffnet werden. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt warteten bereits Tausende von Menschen geduldig draußen. Viele hatten über Nacht gezeltet oder waren früh am Morgen angekommen, um einen guten Platz in der Schlange zu bekommen. Kurz vor 17 Uhr kamen Busladungen von Menschen an und wurden direkt an den Rolltoren an der Spitze der Linie herausgelassen, was zu einem Andrang und einem Ansturm von Leuten führte, die hereinstürmten, um die besten Plätze zu bekommen. Kurz bevor ABBA die Bühne betreten sollte, begannen Regen und Wind mit voller Kraft. Die Aufregung des Publikums wurde jedoch nicht entleert - und bald würden sie alle „We Want ABBA“ singen. Es gab Diskussionen darüber, ob sie unter diesen Bedingungen tatsächlich weitermachen und auftreten könnten oder nicht. Die Entscheidung war jedoch gewesen, dass 30.000 Menschen, die bereit waren, im Regen zu stehen und darauf zu warten, sie zu sehen, uns nicht im Stich lassen konnten. Also betrat ABBA pünktlich um 20.30 Uhr die Bühne und ging in den vollen Flug, auch wenn Regen auf die Bühne strömte. Während Waterloo sah Fridas Begeisterung, wie ihre Füße unter ihr hervorrutschten und mit dem Gesicht nach unten fast flach auf die Bühne fielen. Sie blieb einige Sekunden unten, aber schließlich hob sie sich auf ein Knie, streckte die Arme weit aus, um zu zeigen, dass es ihr gut ging, stand auf und fuhr mit der Show fort, anscheinend hatte sie sich einen Finger verstaucht und sich die Hüfte verletzt. Danach wurde die Crew auf der Bühne gesehen, wie sie mit weißen Handtüchern das Wasser aufwischte.
Abgesehen von So Long spielte ABBA an diesem Abend jeden Song von ihrer Set-Liste. Ich denke, dass aufgrund der physischen Natur der Choreografie entschieden wurde, dass es nicht sicher ist, dieses Lied nach Fridas früheren Erfahrungen zu spielen.
Am Freitag, den 4. März 1977 gab ABBA ihr zweites Konzert in Sydney. Dieses Konzert war nicht Teil des ursprünglichen Zeitplans und wurde aufgrund der überwältigenden Nachfrage nach Tickets hinzugefügt. In Wirklichkeit hätten sie mindestens 5 Konzerte in Sydney geben können und trotzdem wären alle Shows ausverkauft gewesen. Genau wie in Großbritannien übertraf die Nachfrage die verfügbaren weit. Am Freitagabend gab es überhaupt keine Probleme, und ABBA führte die komplette Set-Liste, einschließlich So Long, vor weiteren 30.000 Menschen durch, die „Wir wollen ABBA“ sangen. Am 4. wurde mehr Wert auf die Kontrolle der Menschenmenge gelegt - mit mehr Sicherheit, um sicherzustellen, dass niemand in der anfänglichen Eile nach Sitzplätzen niedergeschlagen oder mit Füßen getreten wurde. Die Ereignisse des Vorabends hatten alle schockiert - wer würde erwarten, dass sich ABBA-Fans hysterisch verhalten? Aber die Organisatoren lernten schnell und alles verlief reibungsloser bis zum Feuerwerk am Ende der Show. Als das Konzert am Freitagabend zu Ende war, musste die Crew den Sound, die Beleuchtung und die Bühnenausrüstung sofort aufteilen und sie auf den Weg nach Melbourne bringen, um sie für die Show am nächsten Tag einzurichten. Die Ausrüstung wurde auf der Straße in IPEC-Lastwagen und per Luftfracht verschickt - wobei die Filmausrüstung mit der Besatzung auf einem folgenden Charterflug verschickt wurde -, der Sydney um 4 Uhr morgens verließ. Die Filmausrüstung bestand aus 40 Teilen mit einem Gewicht von etwa 900 kg.
